What is Prosecco?
Prosecco is a sparkling wine from Northeastern Italy, specifically from nine provinces in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. In fact, Prosecco is named after the Italian town of Prosecco, which is a village near Trieste in Friuli.
While Prosecco is a sparkling wine, it is different to Champagne. First and foremost, it is made with the Glera grape instead of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay that are used in Champagne. Second, Prosecco producers do not use the traditional champagne method. Instead, they use what is known as the “tank” method, or the Charmat Method. Using this technique, winemakers mix the base white wine with yeast and sugar in a large pressure-resistant tank to cause a second fermentation. This wine is then sent through a filtering system, and the sugar is added. This method makes Prosecco less expensive to produce than Champagne.
These differences also come to life in the tasting experience. Prosecco has incredible floral aromas with sweet and honeysuckle notes. Compared to Champagne, Prosecco has simple, clean flavors. While Champagne often has notes of brioche or almonds, Prosecco is all about those sharp fruity notes, which dance on the tongue.
Because of its sweet aromas and fruity taste, we think it is the perfect drink to accompany a long lunch on a Saturday afternoon!
We hope to see you all for Bottomless Prosecco soon
